Gold And Silver - Why You Should Keep Them Seperate 

If you’re an avid collector of gold and silver, then take it from us – you should never store them together! While the two precious metals are both beautiful and valuable, they should always be kept apart in your jewelry box. Here’s why:

We need to do a little chemistry to answer the question of whether gold and silver can coexist in the same jewelry box. Because the two metals don't react with one another, you can wear them both at the same time without experiencing any damage.

While gold doesn’t react with silver, both do interact with air. That’s where the concern comes in.

On the surface level, storing gold and silver together seems like a great idea—you can have all of your precious metal jewelry in one place! However, the chemistry behind it is a bit more complicated than that. Silver is incredibly reactive to sulfur compounds found in the environment (think: air pollution). These compounds cause silver to form a sulfide film on its surface—giving it an unsightly black or gray color. This process is known as tarnishing, which is brought on by oxidation, which transfers when you store tarnished silver jewelry with other metals, not only gold.
