HOW TO CLEAN VERMEIL JEWELRY:
Vermeil jewelry is a great way to add a touch of luxury to your everyday look. But over time, this special type of jewelry can start to accumulate dirt and oils from the environment as well as our skin. Fortunately, with the right knowledge and supplies, you can easily keep your vermeil pieces looking their best. Read on to learn how to clean vermeil jewelry and keep it shining for years to come!
HOW TO CLEAN VERMEIL JEWELRY: ROUTINE CARE
To clean your vermeil jewelry, simply rub and polish it gently with a soft or microfiber cloth. We advise against using a jewelry polishing cloth unless specifically labeled as "untreated." Treated jewelry polishing cloths often contain polishing agents and chemicals meant for silver, not gold. They'll be too harsh for your gold vermeil jewelry and could cause premature wear-down.
Always use a clean, soft cloth that won't damage or scratch the jewelry. Lint from a rough fabric can get caught in settings and prongs. By simply rubbing your jewelry and removing the everyday grime, you'll be amazed at how much vermeil jewelry will shine and polish back up to its original condition.
HOW TO CLEAN VERMEIL JEWELRY: DEEP CLEAN
For deep cleaning, it is best to use liquid soap and warm water for your vermeil jewelry. You'll want to use lukewarm water, not hot, and all-natural liquid soap. Despite what you might read elsewhere, avoiding completely submerging your jewelry into soapy water is best. Instead, wet a soft, lint-free cloth by dipping it into a bowl of warm water mixed with a small amount of all-natural soap. Gently rub your jewelry clean with this soft cloth.
After you're done cleaning your jewelry, rinse your pieces by using another cloth dipped in plain water only. Gently pat dry afterward.
HOW TO REMOVE TARNISH FROM GOLD VERMEIL?
The great thing about vermeil is that it rarely tarnishes. Occasionally if it does, though, this usually happens when it is exposed to harsh elements such as moist air or chemicals like chlorine for extended periods. The tarnish spots can appear as brown or dark spots and are super easy to remove. Gently rub the vermeil surface with a soft, clean cloth; it should clear right up!
If you notice a grey, filmy, scaly-like substance, your jewelry piece is not genuine vermeil and most likely has a brass base. Brass is what can grow that kind of reactive tarnish which is removable only by a buffing process (which removes the outer gold layer and thins the metal, so take extreme caution.)
CAN I USE AN ULTRASONIC CLEANER ON GOLD VERMEIL?
No, you can not use an ultrasonic cleaner on gold vermeil jewelry because vermeil layers are bonded together using an electroplating process. This process involves bonding through electro currents, and ultrasonic waves disrupt this bonding loosening the plating.
In fact, we advise against using an ultrasonic cleaner on any type of plated jewelry. But we love using an ultrasonic cleaner to clean solid gold jewelry and sterling silver jewelry (without a rhodium plating).
HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR GOLD VERMEIL JEWELRY:
Your vermeil jewelry will last longer if you take better care of it. Here are some jewelry care tips:
- Be careful with chemicals. One of the easiest and most frequent errors is this one. Try to avoid using hand sanitizer, body lotion, perfume, hairspray, or hair gel while wearing jewelry. Metals and chemicals can react with each other, leading to tarnish stains.
- Avoid exposing the jewelry to harsh elements such as chlorine or salt water, extreme temperatures, and direct sunlight for long periods of time.
- Remove your vermeil jewelry when doing routine tasks such as cleaning, exercising, gardening and so on. Excessive exposure to moisture can cause discoloration or breakage.
- Store your vermeil jewelry separately in a soft cloth pouch or sealed plastic bag to avoid damage and keep it looking its best. Avoid storing different jewelry pieces together as this can cause scratching or abrasion of the metal layers.
DOES GOLD VERMEIL WEAR OFF?
Gold vermeil is not the same as solid gold, so that it can deteriorate over time with abrasion and contact with harsh chemicals, air pollutants, etc.
Suppose you're a little rougher with your jewelry wear. In that case, the worst-case scenario will probably be wearing down parts of the gold layer, making some of the sterling silver underneath visible, or developing a whiter gold appearance if silver shines through in a few high-impact areas.
HOW TO RESTORE GOLD VERMEIL:
If your vermeil jewelry is very damaged and has lost all luster, you can still have it restored via a replating process by a professional jeweler. Just specify you would like your vermeil jewelry replated with a layer of gold that is 2.5 -3 microns thick.
Caring for your vermeil jewelry pieces is easier than you think. Avoid harsh chemicals, store them in an airtight container or box and try to take off rings before washing your hands. Following these steps will keep your pieces looking beautiful for longer. If too much wear down happens, it can be re-plated by a professional jeweler. Gold vermeil jewelry is an affordable and beautiful way to accessorize your outfits, so make sure you take good care of your pieces!
