  • Moonstone crystals are the most valuable stone from the feldspar family of minerals.

  • The highest-quality moonstone crystals are found in deposits in India and Sri Lanka. However, you can also spot moonstone deposits worldwide, including in the United States, Mexico, Australia, Germany, and Tanzania. However, the rarest form of moonstone crystals is found only in Sri Lanka. 


  • Moonstones get their name from their iridescent sheen, resembling a starry night sky moon. Moonstones come in blue, green, brown, yellow, peach, grey, and shades of white. Colorless moonstones with a blue sheen are considered the most valuable variety. 


  • Both moonstone and rainbow moonstone exhibit adularescence, though rainbow moonstone displays blue or rainbow tones on a transparent stone. Whereas regular moonstone displays soft white or grey undertones on an opaque stone. 


  • Moonstone properties include a hardness ranking between 6 and 6.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. This hardness ranking means moonstone crystals prone to breaking due to the cleavage within the stone.
