What is your face shape? This info is important and helps you to assess life's toughest questions like which haircut is most flattering on me? Which makeup will make me look most beautiful? And most importantly, it just might be the answer to finding your favorite pair of earrings.

Learning how to determine your face shape and how to compliment your shape with jewelry is a fairly easy thing to do, so let’s get started!

Face Shape Guide: The Basics

The way that you figure out your face shape is by paying attention to the 3 Basics:
1. The length & width of the face.
2. The sides of the face.
3. Its features (hairline, jaw line, nose, chin, cheeks, cheekbones).

So go on, give it a go. What's your face shape?

Oval Face Shape

Do you have an oval face shape?

1. The length & width of the face. Your face is longer than it is wide, but not considerably longer.

2. The sides of the face. Beginning from your cheekbone, your hairline narrows in at about the same degree that your jaw line reduces in. The fullest part of your face is typically situated at cheek bones.

3. The Features (hairline, jaw line, chin, cheeks, cheekbones). Your jaw line is typically rounded and not square . It's the same for your hairline. Your chin is usually not pronounced and blends right in with your jaw.

Recommended Earring Styles: The best earring shapes for oval faces are tear drops and ovals, which provide a soft complement to the face’s natural contour.

Recommended Necklace Styles: Necklaces of all lengths work for oval faces. For longer necks, shorter length necklaces are favorable as they prevent further elongating of the torso.

Round Face Shape

Do you have a round face shape?

1. The length & width of the face. Your face is just about as long as it is wide, if not equal. You may feel like your face is a little short.

2. The sides of the face. Starting at your cheekbone, your hairline is round and gradually narrows in at about the same angle that your jaw line thins out. The fullest part of your face is usually in the center.

3. The Features (hairline, jaw line, chin, cheeks, cheekbones). Your jaw line is normally round and not square. For your hairline, the same goes. Your chin is not noticeable and blends in with your jaw. Typically, you won't have very noticeable cheekbones, but you could get full apples on your cheeks when you smile.

Recommended Earring Styles: Good compliments for a round face shape include long earrings or any tapered earring style because it assists in bringing overall balance to round cheeks. Chandelier earrings also work-well.

Recommended Necklace Styles: Longer, looping necklaces draw the eyes down and lengthen the look of a wide face. Large focal components creating a "V" draw attention below the neckline, which creates a strong triangular point and a longer line. Ignore unappealing choker necklaces, collar and princess lengths, since they trim the neck and add width to the throat.

Heart Face Shape

Do you have a heart face shape?

1. The length & width of the face. Your face is longer than its width, but not so much longer.

2. The sides of the face. Starting at your cheekbone, your hairline doesn't really tapers in like how the angle of your jaw line tapers in. Somewhere near or above your eyebrows is the widest part of your face. It can seem like the widest part of your face is around the apples of your cheeks when you smile, though.

3. The Features (hairline, jaw line, chin, cheeks, cheekbones). You don't have a sharp angle at the jaw down to the chin rather it is more like a curve. You typically have a defined chin that is usually round (not always). Your hairline tends to have a widows peak, but it could just be a rounded hairline. You most likely have fullness of the cheeks.

Recommended Earring Styles: Wearing dangling earrings that have a rounded curve towards the bottom is flattering for this face shape. This earring style will lessen the sharp contours around the chin and makes it appear more rounded. Other good options include dangling teardrop and chandelier earrings.

Recommended Necklace Styles: In general, heart-shaped faces look the most dazzling in shorter necklaces with curved angles. A bold pendant on a short necklace is an ideal look as it creates a visual stop directly under the chin, shortening the look of the face.

Oblong Face Shape

Do you have an oblong face shape?

1. The length & width of the face. Your face is dramatically longer than it is wide. You may feel like your face is lengthy and skinny.

2. The sides of the face. Your hairline tapers higher up to around the same degree as your jaw line tapers further down, starting at your cheekbones. As the width remains reasonably uniform (until you get to the jaw bone and top of the brow), there isn't a "fullest part" of the face.

3. The Features (hairline, jaw line, chin, cheeks, cheekbones). You have a rounded jaw and not square. For your hairline, the same goes. Usually, Your chin is not prominent and meshes right in with your jaw.

Recommended Earring Styles: For this long face shape, short danglers and pearl studs work well because they draw the eye across the face horizontally.

Recommended Necklace Styles: Choker, Collar and princess lengths are the ideal necklace length (especially if you have a long neck), since they break up the vertical line that occurs with a long face.

Square Face Shape

Do you have a square face shape?

1. The length & width of the face. Your face is just about as long as it is wide, if not identical. You may feel like your face is a bit short.

2. The sides of the face. Your hairline is straight and does not taper in until it gets higher up, starting at your cheekbone. Same goes for your jaw line but further down.

3. The Features (hairline, jaw line, chin, cheeks, cheekbones). Your jaw line is normally a square one. Maybe the top of your hairline is straight. Typically your chin is not conspicuous and blends in with your jaw line. You usually do not have prominent cheek bones.

Recommended Earring Styles: For this face shape, earrings need to elongate the face. It is best to wear longer, drop earrings that are slim in width in order balance out a square jaw.

Recommended Necklace Styles: Square faces need long necklaces with curves to soften their strong jaw lines. Princess, matinee, opera and rope lengths are the perfect size for long necklaces (especially if you have a short neck), since they create a vertical line to lengthen a square jaw.

Diamond Face Shape

Do you have a diamond face shape?

1. The length & width of the face. Your face is longer than its width, but not substantially longer.

2. The sides of the face. The sides of one's face. Starting just above & below your cheekbones, your hairline tapers to around the same degree as your jaw line tapers in. Your cheek bones are the widest part of your face.

3. The Features (hairline, jaw line, chin, cheeks, cheekbones). Your chin hits a point (a soft or strong point). Your hairline tends to narrow in to a point.
Recommended Earring Styles: Short to medium length danglers are excellent options. Avoid, long earrings that drape at or below your jaw line will make a diamond shaped face appear longer than it really is.

Recommended Necklace Styles: Diamond-face shapes are already long, wearing lengthy necklaces will only accentuate the excess length. A better option is to consider wearing short necklaces that incorporate width-wide curves, rectangle pendants and collars.

Celebs with this face shape: Tyra Banks, Jlo,  Liz Hurley, Serena Williams, Scarlett Johansson, Anna Kendrick, Taylor Swift, Camila Alves, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Freida Pinto, Halle Berry, Selma Blair, etc.

Triangle Face Shape

Do you have a triangle face shape?

1. The length & width of the face. Your face is longer than its width, but not much longer.

2. The sides of the face. Your hairline doesn't really taper in, starting at your cheekbone, like how your jaw line angle tapers in. Somewhere near or above your eyebrows is the widest-looking section of your face.

3. The Features (hairline, jaw line, chin, cheeks, cheekbones). You definitely have a sharp angle at the jaw down to the chin. You typically have a pointed chin that is round or square. Likewise, your hairline is round or straight.

Recommended Earring Styles: Earrings that are wider at the bottom than at the top complement a triangular face. The goal is to offset a triangular look with earrings that de-emphasize the forehead and create an illusion with the width of your jaw line.

Recommended Necklace Styles: Triangle-shaped faces need short necklaces with soft curves to minimize the strong jaw line. Princess and morning lengths are perfect, as they position a gentle curve under the jaw line and lengthen the look of the face.

Celebs with this face shape:  Scarlett Johansson, Rashida Jones, Jessica Szohr, Jennifer Love Hewitt, etc.

Pear Face Shape

Do you have a pear face shape?

1. The length & width of the face. Your face is longer than it is wide, but not dramatically longer.

2. The sides of the face. Your hairline slightly dips in, starting at your cheekbone, but then sort of extends a little towards the end. Your jaw angles out, and the widest part of your face is at your below your lips.

3. The Features (hairline, jaw line, chin, cheeks, cheekbones). You definitely have a strong jaw line but you may not necessarily have a well-defined chin. The bottom portion of your face is full. In the apple of your cheeks, you may have some fullness, but you're not usually going to have pronounced cheekbones.

Recommended Earring Styles: If you have a pear-shaped face, earrings that are broader at the top than they are at the bottom are sure to flatter. Avoid earrings that are wider at the bottom than the top as they will make your face appear bottom-heavy.

Recommended Necklace Styles: Short necklaces that form a “V” with a pendant are perfect for a pear shaped face. This will give the impression of a longer face and draw the jaw out.

Celebs with this face shape: Ellie Kemper, Kelly Osbourne, Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Williams, Linda Evangelista, Isabella Rossellini , Sophia Bush, Mariska Hargitay, Kate Walsh,  etc.

In conclusion, any fashionista worth his/her salt in the style department understands the difference between face shapes. Why? Because a style that looks fantastic on someone with an oblong face (that is, long and narrow), won't complement a square face in quite the same way. We hope our easy to understand face shapes guide helps you on your next fashion adventure.
